Backblaze Review for January 2015
Backblaze is an online file storage tool that places a strong emphasis on simplicity. In fact, simplicity is the key competitive advantage that Backblaze has over other file storage tools. With unlimited backup and software that runs on autopilot, Backblaze is the easiest-to-use file storage tool on the market.
What most people seem to like the most about Backblaze.com is that it offers unlimited storage space for as low as $3.96 per month. If you don’t want to sign up for a long term account, Backblaze has an auto-bill option that costs just $5 a month with all the same features. There is no other online backup tool out there that beats these prices.
The software is designed to automatically find files that you might want to back up. When you first install the software, Backblaze will scan your computer for all user-generated files and documents. The software skips files such as Windows installation files because those can be recovered with ease. What Backblaze searches for are files such as Word documents, videos, downloads and other files that aren’t so easily recovered.
Backblaze provides a number of useful features within the software. Military grade encryption is used to protect your files at all times. Continuous backup provides real-time protection while automatic throttling can be enabled to make sure you don’t use too much bandwidth (for those of you with ISPs that limit bandwidth).
One of the coolest features that Backblaze offers is the “find my computer” feature. If your computer is lost or stolen, the locate feature waits for that computer to be connected to the internet. As soon as the computer has an internet connection, it will report its current IP address and map it for you. This feature is particularly effective for stolen computers.
There are several options to restore your files if your hard drive is lost. A free web restore option can be used to download files individually or to download your entire data set. There are also optional paid restore options in the form of USB flash drives (28 GB) and USB hard drives (1 TB).
The downside to Backblaze is that it’s not a very feature-rich backup tool. Backblaze does not offer file syncing, file sharing or even a mobile app. Backblaze is a lean backup tool and nothing else. We might see more features in the future, but for now this is what you get. When you consider the pricing model, it’s not a bad deal at all.
Quick list of Backblaze features:
- Unlimited storage space
- External hard drives supported
- Locate lost computers function
- File encryption
- Automatic bandwidth throttling optional
- Automatic file backups
- Can find files for backup automatically
- Available in 11 languages
- 15 day free trial
- Restore options: web download, USB flash drive, USB hard drive
Customer support at Backblaze is decent but not amazing. Help is offered in the form of an online knowledge base and e-mail address. There is no support phone number or live chat option for customers. It’s hard to fault them for making that decision, though. The most expensive plan Backblaze offers is $5 a month.
Having said that, the Backblaze team is recognized for interacting with customers and listening to suggestions. They have held question-and-answer sessions on Reddit and post regular behind-the-scenes updates on their blog.
Backblaze Plans and Pricing
The Backblaze pricing plan is simple. The service costs $5 a month, with discounts if you purchase 1 or 2 years in advance. This plan is offered to all customers and all features are included. The month-to-month plan costs $5 a month, the 1 year plan costs $50 up front and the 2 year plan costs $95 up front.
If you’re not entirely sure about Backblaze yet, you can give the service a try for free. Backblaze offers a 15 day free trial with no strings attached. You can download the software, create an account and give it a try. If you like it, you’re welcome to upgrade to a paid version at the regular price. If no, you can walk away at any time.
